Absolutely.

Insist on it.

They do not care if you owe the money. Only if you will pay.

Get it in writing and double check your records. If it doesn't match or doesn't look right, tell them it isn't your debt and insist that they stop contacting you.

The bottom line is that credit collectors are bottom feeders. They bought the debt for pennies from companies that have already written the debt down to zero (and zapped your credit in the process). Anything they get (from anyone) is almost all profit.

The down side for them is that there is virtually nothing they can do to you or for you...except bug the crap out of you. And, legally, they must stop doing that if you tell them to.

You have rights. First, become familiar with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. It is federal law and it covers consumers' rights when dealing with debt collectors. Your state may also have similar legislation. You have the right, within 30 days of the initial contact by the collector, to have the collector validate the debt. Not verify but validate. Make this request in writing, sent it certified mail with return receipt. The collector then must validate the debt within 30 days. For further information go to FTC. gov for more information about the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
