I recently wrote a check and made two errors.

I started to write one letter on the wrong line of the pay to the order of, so i scribbled out that one letter. Then next to it I wrote the wrong letter of the payee and I scribbled that. Then wrote the right name next to those two scribbled, seperated, letters.
Does that make the check bad? The repairman I gave it to took it. Thanks.

PS i didnt initial the scribbles.

I worked in check payment for 14 years. Here's the truth: the banks process the check as quickly as possible, ignoring everything except the amount written. (Which isn't even the "legal amount"). Everything is machine processed and cleared quickly. The only time errors are discovered are if the payer (you), disputed the check and said that someone had altered it. In other words it's up to the consumer to police fraud, not the bank. As long as his bank takes it (and being a commercial customer, they will likely do so), it's all good. If they don't, he'll call you for a new check (be sure to get the old one back).

It might be better to draw a line through an error so the original can still be seen and they can see there was no devious alteration going on. Generally one is supposed to initial any corrections above them. Blank checks are cheap, you can just tear it up and mark void for that # in your ledger.

Depends on the bank, but many banks will accept an altered check, no matter if you initial it or not. Next time, you would be better off starting over and voiding the altered check.
