So my friend wants me to travel about 4 to 5 hours to a city for performance me and him are going to do(we're in a rap group). The problem is the promoter wants us to perform at Motel 6 where the party is located last minute and we are going to have to bring all the music equipment, 2 mics that cost about 800 dollars, speakers, the whole 9. My friend has talked to the promoter on the phone but has never met him yet. Which I think is knida of weird. The promoter also said that he would pay us $500-$1000 for the show, but we haven't seen the money upfront so.........is this a good idea? Plus I have to pay for gas too.

well , you dont know enough about it to go. I have stayed at least 150 motel six and never saw one that had any music venue. CAll the motel six he wants you to go to and ask them. He said 500 to 1000 , so what makes it 500 or 1000 ? Do you get a piece of door or what ? If so , if their a small crowd, you share will be less than the gas to get there. Or they are staying at motel six, that has no intertainment. and trying to get a couple fools to bring them 3 or 4000 $ of gear that they plan on stealing from you. after you play for nothing. Does he pay for room? Just to let you know. I would pay not to have to listen to your rap.

Motel 6's do not have any kind of conference or halls, as far as I know. But, there could be some motels where such rooms exist.

Take the advice of the answerer above - call the motel and confirm that there is indeed a party scheduled for that date, and if they do have a room to hold it where a group can perform. If the answers to your questions are no - well, you know the conclusion.

You could also ask for an advance of 1/3 the money, to cover your expenses. If the promoter refuses, well, again the conclusion is obvious.

I tend to be very skeptical of such offers; so be careful.
