Why do you have to spend it? I would save it in a local bank CD. My Dad always told me to have three months of "cost of living" saved into a local bank CD. That way if I lost my job, or if I was injured and wasn't able to work, I didn't have to worry about what to do. My Dad was a very wise man. I say start by saving this toward your three months of "emergency fund".

$500 won't buy you anything that cool. You might have more fun saving it to spend on small stuff like going to the movies or getting something to eat at your favorite restaurant.
